Sharon (Owner)
I grew up in South Africa and began my entrepreneurial journey at nine. By fifteen, I had started a business that won Best Small Business in South Africa when I was eighteen. At twenty-one, I moved to London and founded a creative marketing agency that over time expanded internationally, with teams in ten countries.
When our youngest son was a baby, my husband and I were on holiday in Cape Town and spotted Buitenzorg in the distance during a long, sunny lunch at Jonkershuis. We said, “Wouldn’t it be incredible to live in such a beautiful part of the world?” After ten years of patiently waiting for Buitenzorg to come onto the market, we finally had the chance – and in recent years, we’ve lovingly restored and further developed the estate.
Joss (Owner)
My husband’s career began in client-side marketing. He later joined me on the agency side and, during Covid, co-founded a tech company with a close friend. Beyond tech, building runs in his family, and his passion and vision for Buitenzorg have transformed the estate over the years. Our latest addition to Buitenzorg Estate, Nova BZ, began as a smaller home for us to move into once our four children had flown the nest but then quickly evolved into the spectacular residence it is today.
As a result, our family is now spoilt for choice when deciding where to end each busy day, enjoying a chilled glass of wine while overlooking the vineyards of Groot Constantia and beyond.
John (Estate Manager)
The majestic homestead truly comes alive thanks to our exceptional team of dedicated individuals, who take immense pride in the glowing reviews we receive from our guests. Their warm smiles, attention to detail, and genuine care have become as much a part of Buitenzorg as its historic walls. Many of our team members have been with us for years, helping to create the welcoming atmosphere that makes guests feel instantly at home.
As Estate Manager, John leads both the domestic and gardening teams with professionalism and dedication. His deep knowledge of the property and commitment to excellence ensure every stay is memorable, and his genuine care for Buitenzorg shines through in every detail.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi 500/250 Mbps (with UPS backup) across Buitenzorg Estate.
Guest Safety
Buitenzorg offers exceptional security and complete peace of mind. The private estate is fully enclosed by a steel electric fence and protected by more than 30 CCTV cameras monitored 24/7 by a professional surveillance company. Discreet exterior garden beams and interior alarm systems provide additional layers of protection.
Although the estate is large and designed for privacy, there is always activity on the property from staff and residents, which further enhances the overall sense of safety and security.
On-Site Support
Our support team is available during the day, and John, our Estate Manager, resides on the estate and is happy to assist guests with alarm setup or any questions.
Check-in & Checkout
Check-in is from 2:00 pm, and check-out is by 10:00 am. Times may vary only by prior arrangement. For exclusive estate rentals check-in and out times are at your leisure.
Water Features
Please note that there are water features as well as three swimming pools, so young children must be supervised at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the estate available for commercial shoots, TV shows, etc.?
Yes, the estate is often booked for commercial shoots (adverts, branded content, filming, etc.), but this is always subject to a formal location agreement, and appropriate fees and insurance.
Can I hold a video or photoshoot on the estate?
While estate guests are welcome to capture images for personal use, professional filming and photography are prohibited on the estate unless prior permission has been granted.
Are events allowed?
Events are by prior arrangement only, and an event fee will be charged.
Is the estate wheelchair friendly?
All garden areas are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, though they may include thick lawns, sloping gradients, uneven ground, and gravel pathways. The Pool Villa, Coach House, and Vineyard Cottage are all wheelchair-friendly.
Do you allow dogs?
Two Ridgeback dogs live at Buitenzorg. They are well socialised and will warmly welcome guests. Guests wishing to bring their own dogs are welcome, but prior permission is required.
Can I invite friends/family over?
The maximum number of day visitors is twice the number of guests your accommodation can host. For example, if your villa or cottage accommodates six people, you may invite up to six day visitors.
